I recently read Walden by the prominent Transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau in preparation for our nature walk at the Mt. Falcon Park West Trailhead. Ultimately, I found that the book is a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings. I picked out a few of my favorite quotes!

“I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”

This quote is saying that if we persistently chase our dreams, we will reach ultimate satisfaction and success. He has not said that we will undoubtedly reach our dreams but knowing we gave our all in the pursuit of what we are passionate about is success itself. This connects with our reading about living life on the edge as if you never devote yourself 100% to something you’ll never know what you could accomplish and undoubtedly live with regret.

“Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth.”

Thoreau believes that truths and knowledge about how the world works is the greatest accomplishment. He is a solitary man who values his connection with nature above all else and this is demonstrated through his actions. He isolates himself from all “distractions” of the civilized world and spends hours upon hours each day just thinking and reflecting upon his encounters with wildlife and beauty. Although this may have worked for him, reflection is ultimately a collaborative experience and makes it easier to form higher connections due to seeing things from different perspectives and pulling in experts from multiple disciplines. However, individual reflection is very valuable at organizing your own beliefs and establishing your values and goals.

“Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth.”

This quote is saying that we are intrinsically connected to the world. It is able to give us shelter, allow us to breath and survive, obtain water and food, and therefore we should be respectful to our mother land. It also inspires us, and allows us to achieve clarity on predicaments when we just look beyond ourselves into a world full of natural beauty and intrigue.
